Training Packages

A Description of Training Packages

A Training Package is a set of nationally endorsed standards and qualifications for recognising and assessing people's skills.

They contain:

  • Competency standards which describe the skills and knowledge a person requires to operate effectively in the workplace.
  • Assessment guidelines for valid, reliable, flexible and fair assessment.
  • Qualification packaging rules which outline what qualifications are available within the Training Package.

Training Packages are developed by industry through national Industry Skills Councils or by enterprises to meet the identified training needs of specific industries or industry sectors.

They must go through a government-backed endorsement process before they are released to the public. As part of this process, developers must provide evidence of extensive consultation and support within industry for the Training Package.

Training Packages are reviewed regularly (usually every three years) to ensure they remain relevant to current industry needs. Visit Training Packages@Work for Training Package status information.

Training Packages are standards and, therefore, do not prescribe how an individual should be trained. Teachers and trainers develop learning strategies tailored to the needs of their clients. A range of support materials have been developed to help teachers and trainers develop their learning strategies.
