Australia has one of the world's most diverse populations. Differences take many forms, including race, culture, ability, family structure, class, religion, gender, age, language and appearance. To live in harmony it's essential that all Australians accept these differences between people. But this doesn't always happen. Prejudices and stereotypes limit the way people can take part in the world around them. Educators concerned about this have developed what is called the antibias curriculum. It is a curriculum which says that differences are good and asks adults and children to deal directly with unfair beliefs and behaviours.
This module looks at the anti-bias approach. It examines Australian legislation such as the Commonwealth's Federal Racial Discrimination Act, the Human Rights Act and the Equal Opportunity Act and State Anti- Discrimination Acts which set a legal framework for child care workers. More importantly, this module helps you to begin to identify your own values and beliefs and challenge those which can lead to you being biased. It suggests ways you can begin to think and work so that every child in your care is treated with equality, acceptance and respect. This module is one of the ways you can learn to do this.
